LA's red light camera exemption to Ariz boycott

Is the LAPD being hurt by Arizona boycott over illegal immigration law? | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

"First, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that several officials would not attend the annual Airborne Law Enforcement Assn. conference in Tucson as such a move would violate the L.A. City Council's boycott of Arizona...
The council voted to suspend most travel to Arizona as part of its protest of that state's law dealing with illegal immigration..."

"Now, the focus is on the LAPD's red-light camera program, which officials say should get an exemption from the city's contracting boycott of Arizona..."

"On Tuesday, the City Council is scheduled to consider — and appears likely to approve — an exception to the boycott that would allow a 10-month extension of a multimillion-dollar agreement with Scottsdale-based American Traffic Solutions. The firm operates cameras at 32 city intersections that catch tens of thousands of red-light violators each year. The council's Public Safety Committee says the exception is justified because red-light cameras provide a "significant benefit to public safety."

Paul Weber, head of the LAPD officers union, blasted the trip cancellation: "Public safety shouldn't be sacrificed just because Arizona's become a political football."

The City Council's Public Safety Committee says red-light cameras provide a "significant benefit to public safety."( A COMPLETE BALD-FACED LIE!)

MY COMMENTS:
The LA city council and LA Civic Leaders are complete hypocrites and bald- faced liars. They voted a boycott of Arizona but want to exempt red light cameras, which are operated by a Scottsdale Arizona firm. Reason: it is not about public safety:: it is about revenue generation.
A red light infraction is a $350-$400 infraction. Add traffic school and court processing fees and that ticket balloons up to around $500.
That is a big chunk of change which is portioned among local, county, and state agencies. Believe me it is not about public safety, it is about fee generation for increasingly broke LA region muncipalities( lots of LA County municipalities besides LA City have installed red light cameras)

It is all about fleecing the public. Take it from me as a 15 year veteran transport delivery driver. LA City is among the most aggressive cities in USA it come to collecting fees from traffic tickets, and that includes the LA Bureau OF Parking enforcement, the most fascist collection of jack-booted revenue collectors in America.
